The Latest AMD Ryzen 7985WX for Yocto Build
About four years ago, our company purchased an AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ 2990WX with a 32-core CPU for Yocto builds. At that time, using all the cores for building was unstable—the build would freeze, and the PC would crash, so we couldn’t utilize the full 32 cores and 64 threads and had to settle for using only about half. Ultimately, that PC broke down a month ago, and we now find ourselves in a position to purchase a new one.
IT provided three options shown in the image above (7995WX, 7985WX, and 7975WX), and, considering the remaining team budget, we ultimately purchased the 7985WX. The 7995WX, with 96 cores and 192 threads, required more memory, so we configured it with 512GB (eight 64GB DDR5 4800 modules), while the others were configured with 256GB. The final specifications of the purchased system are as follows.
- CPU: AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ PRO 7985WX (64 Core, 128 Threads)
- Memory: 64GB DDR5 4800 64GB * 4 = 256GB
- SSD: 4TB SSD M.2 22280 * 2 = 8TB
- HDD: 12TB HD 7200 RPM
The cost was approximately 11,000 euros. Given the purchasing process, it will likely arrive around the end of the year or early next year after the holidays. I hope it will be more stable than the previous 2990WX.
While looking at AMD CPUs, I also came across the AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ 7980X model with nearly identical specs to the one above. Overall, the performance seemed almost the same, and surprisingly, the non-PRO model was priced more affordably with good reviews. After some research, I found that the PRO model is designed for workstations and is reportedly more stable. Since the system will be running nearly 24/7, IT recommended the PRO model, even though it’s more expensive.
Once the new workstation arrives, I plan to utilize all 128 threads in parallel to run Yocto and Android builds, and I’ll share the results. I’m excited to see how fast it will be.. :)
